“Blood Ties” is episode thirteen of season one of Mutant X.
Jesse is leaving a club at night but he speaks to Brennan first, who is with a girl. Brennan is going to walk Dana to her car first. Jesse heads to a car park but there is a man following him. He evidently notices because he phases out of the wall behind the man, demanding to know why he is following him. When the man turns around, Jesse recognises him. The man tells Jesse he’s on an undercover assignment. Then a car drives bay, shooting at them. The man admits he’s in a little bit of trouble, and slips a disc into Jesse’s pocket. A woman shouts at the man, Noah, that he can’t keep running, and a car is going to run Noah over, but drives into a hardened Jesse instead. The woman states that Jesse is one of Eckhart’s New Mutants and she and her people leave. Noah has gone as well, but left a phone behind. Brennan shows up at this point and, looking at the destruction, asks what happened. Jesse tells him his dad showed up.
Jesse explains to Emma that he never saw his dad much, because he was often on assignment. According to Adam, the people pursuing were from Nexxogen, a bioengineering firm involved in something related to cloning. Genomex has had something to do with them as well in the past. There was a fire at a Nexxogen facility in Martez that was called an industrial accident and blamed on a gas leak.
Eckhart is approached by a guard, Calvin Porter, who was hoping to speak to him about a promotion to a field position. Seriously, why does anyone ever approach Eckhart about a promotion? As to how he found out; Porter is a New Mutant with enhanced hearing. He has an audio filter over his ears, which he explains to Eckhart. Eckhart is not interested. Then Porter overhears something; Eckhart asks what. A Nicole Porter is here to see Eckhart.
Carter is the woman who was after Noah. She tells Eckhart they have a problem; a member of Nexxogen’s security staff downloaded sensitive information about the Martez incident. Eckhart doesn’t care. Of course, he will end up caring. The information implicates Genomex in the incident and people will learn it was no industrial accident. Eckhart promises some GS agents to help. Carter mentions a New Mutant encountered as well. Porter is told he will earn his promotion if he gets the disc. Well, that’s not likely to happen.
Brennan has got into Nexxogen’s personnel file. Noah Kilmartin was the head of security until a month ago, when he was fired. Carter is the director of operations since before the accident. The company would have gone under without funding from Genomex. Which begs the question as to why keep a rival company in business. It’s believed to be related to the Martez incident.
Noah rungs Jesse, wanting him to come see him, but come alone and not tell anyone. Porter is able to overhear Noah talking and hears where the meeting will be.
Adam is prepping Emma and Shalimar to get into Nexxogen, so they can tap into the database and uplink the information to the Sanctuary’s system. Brennan speaks to Jesse, because he’s concerned about Noah. Jesse doesn’t want to listen and claims he has a date.
Jesse arrives at the meeting place but Noah isn’t there. Noah rings him and tells him to get into the car, as Porter and two other agents arrive. Jesse doesn’t want to leave without his father but Noah tells him he won’t. Because Noah is in the back of the car, slightly damaged.
Jesse takes Noah to the New Mutant safehouse and Noah explains he stumbled onto a scandal related to the Martez incident and New Mutants. If the real truth came out, heads would roll. Noah downloaded everything and explains he slipped the disc into Jesse’s pocket. Noah doesn’t want to involve Jesse’s friends.
Emma and Shalimar arrive at Nexxogen; there’s a brief hiccup when the system can’t find Emma’s fake ID. Porter is telling Eckhart that everything is under control. Eckhart doesn’t believe it is, because he doesn’t have the disc. Noah admits to Jesse he knows about Mutant X; he’s been in covert ops his entire adult life and has his sources. He tells Jesse he’s proud of him but, when Jesse leaves, Noah calls someone that he sounds to be trying to blackmail into paying for the data he stole.
Shalimar and Emma have to get past tow GS agents to get into Nexxogen’s computer facility. When Adam hears this, he tells them to leave. If Genomex is there, the security codes will have been changed and they will know the database has been tapped into. The GS agents are really quite pathetic, though, as Carter later points out to Eckhart. Jesse doesn’t want to hear that his father might not be the person he thinks he is, but, of course, he will end up having to listen.
