“Make Way for… Medusa” is episode four of season one of Marvel’s Inhumans.
In the previous episode, “Divide and Conquer”, Medusa arrived at the prison just as Black Bolt was escaping with Sammy, another Inhuman – of the human variety – in a helicopter provided by Dr Evan Declan. Black Bolt didn’t spot Medusa and Louise had arrived at the same time. So Medusa pulled a gun on Louise.
This episode opens on the helicopter. Declan tells Sammy and Black Bolt to put on headsets. He explains that he is a privately funded geneticist and he has a makeshift lab on the north side of the island. He wants them to go there with him; Declan says they will be free to leave any time they want. He also wants to do a rapid DNA test on Black Bolt, if he doesn’t mind. Black Bolt indicates that he is looking for his wife and Declan asks if she’s like him. Others with powers are also at the lab and Declan says she could be there too. If not, he will help Black Bolt find her.
Medusa has carjacked Louise and they are currently following the helicopter. Which is flying. Not ideal pursuit conditions. Louise spots Medusa’s ring and says that it has the same insignia as the guy in the helicopter, asking if he is Medusa’s husband. And could Medusa stop pointing a gun at her; she doesn’t want to get shot by accident. Medusa tells Louise that it won’t be by accident. Medusa wants Louise to go faster and, when she doesn’t, puts her own foot on the accelerator. So they run a red light, nearly cause an accident and a cop car follows.
In Attilan, Maximus is talking to the member of the genetic council. Well, the man, Tibor, is more talking to him. He is congratulating Maximus on how he handled Crystal’s departure, for she refused to support Maximus and fled, using Lockjaw to teleport her to Earth. Maximus immediately said that whilst the rest of the royal family had abandoned their people, he wouldn’t. Quick thinking admittedly. It seems the two used to be friends, before Maximus went through terragenesis and became human. Which had never happened before. Maximus may well hold a grudge.
Louise wants to pull over for the police but Medusa shoots at the police car, which crashes. They lose the helicopter though.
When Crystal arrived with Lockjaw, Lockjaw got his but a man driving a quad bike. Crystal is currently accusing the man of hitting her dog; he points out she was in the middle of the road. He asks what Lockjaw is and Crystal tells him Lockjaw is her dog. She wants to know how come he didn’t see them. Well, it’s night for one thing. The man tries approaching and Crystal uses her powers to get him to back off. He introduces himself as Dave. Crystal says that Lockjaw needs a doctor; he can’t take her to her family until he’s healed. Dave has a friend who’s a veterinary technician who lives down the road.
Louise and Medusa have pulled over and got out of the car. When Medusa stares at the Moon, Louise realises that she isn’t from around here and mentions the energy bursts she tracked. Medusa explains that her cousins are here too, and she has to find her husband and go back home. Louise has an idea.
Declan has run a test on Black Bull and discovered that his DNA isn’t human – it isn’t like any of the humans who’ve undergone terragenesis that Declan has discovered before. He says that Black Bolt’s vocal chords are supercharged; Declan is both in awe and terrified. That Black Bolt has the power to kill everyone he loves by accident. Declan hands Black Bolt a tablet with other people he has found on it, then goes outside to make a call. With, as it happens, an Attilan communicator. To Maximus.
Declan tells Maximus that he has made an incredible discovery. Maximus says that Black Bolt needs to be put down as a preventative measure. Declan disagrees; with Black Bolt they could replicate him, find cures to diseases, become anything you want. In other words, become Inhuman. And yes, Declan does need Black Bolt alive to obtain his DNA; cell construction changes immediately on death. The two haven’t met in person, but presumably Maximus is the ‘private funding.’ It also seems that Declan has no idea who he is dealing with.
Karnak has asked to join three people growing ganja in the jungle, and they accepted. He is currently explaining to Jen, the woman, how what he has done will irrigate crops automatically, cutting down man hours and increasing yield. The two seem to be getting along very well. One of the two men, Reno, is watching. Of the three he seems the least likable and most potentially dangerous. He also doesn’t trust Karnak. Problems are likely to arise there.
Gorgon is carrying Lucky’s body, their ambush not having gone to plan. He says that Lucky died because of him, and he never thought he would care about a human dying. He tells the others that it will not be a fair fight, to be told in return that doesn’t mean it’s one they can’t win. Auran and the others are after them and Mordis is not enjoying his jungle excursion.
Back in Louise’s hotel room, Louise is using satellites to try and track the helicopter. Medusa wants Louise to work faster. She tells her that not everyone can track a helicopter. If these satellites don’t work, Louise will try the NSA’s. Medusa going through Louise’s stuff isn’t helping. Nor is Medusa pacing.
Maximus is speaking to the genetic council. He wants to go through terragenesis again. If the key is found as to why humans are changing on Earth, that key can be inserted into Maximus’s genetic code and it will be like going through terragenesis again. He will become Inhuman again (or maybe it won’t work). Tibor thinks it’s too risky and potentially fatal for Maximus. That is not the requested answer.
The vet, Audrey, turns up and asks Dave why he couldn’t just put the dog on the back of his truck. He says she will see. Audrey didn’t want to come and Dave didn’t want her either. When Audrey sees Lockjaw she asks if Crystal crossbred him with something. Like what? Crystal picks up on the tension between Dave and Audrey – they clearly had a relationship in the past. Crystal also thinks Audrey should be working faster and Audrey calls Crystal a princess. When Audrey leaves, Crystal asks Dave how Audrey knew she was a princess.
Louise and Medusa’s relationship gets off to a rocky start. Medusa clearly isn’t after help, even though she needs it. When Louise asks how Medusa got to Earth from the Moon in the first place, Medusa replies by her sister’s teleporting dog. Which does sound a little odd. According to a conversation between Auran and Maximus, Black Bolt’s death is essential to their – Maximus’s – plan. Only they can’t kill him yet. For Maximus wants to use Black Bolt to become Inhuman again. Then there’s Declan. Is he a good guy or a bad guy? Sure, he’s working for Maximus, but he doesn’t know who Maximus is.
