“Episode #3.7” is episode seven of season three of Humans.
In the previous episode, “#3.6”, Mia testified in front of the Dryden Commission, and it went well. After listening to Mia, and Laura, Stanley did not attack the commission as planned. Things were going well. Then Agnes blew herself and a bunch of humans up, and the commission put the contingency plan Basewood into action. Max had discovered what Anatole planned, but far too late, but he also discovered a large number of other bombs.
Anatole had turned up with some other Synths at Laura’s home, and given her a choice. He would kill either Sam or a random human stranger dragged in off the street. Laura chose Sam. Anatole said he had never intended to kill either, just show that even one of those most in favour of helping Synths would still choose their own kind first, and then left with the others, taking Sam with him. Anatole appears to worship Elster, and seems to be doing what he thinks his god intended.
Niska’s quest to find the Synth who sleeps had led her into a trap; a bunch of humans who seemed to be simply killing Synths. Her unusual ability to override external commands allowed Niska to get free, and she was met by the bartended of the place where she had met the man who promised to take her to the Synth. The bartender said he knew the Synth she was looking for, and described the place. Perhaps he is telling the truth.
Leo and Mattie have arrived back after their visit to Leo’s former home. Leo didn’t really find out anything useful; only that his father seemed to consider bringing him back to be a mistake. At the Railyard, Anatole has arrived back with the others. Max tells Anatole that he knows what he did; Anatole does not appear to be upset about this. More satisfied. In the confrontation between Anatole and Max, Anatole tells the others about Max keeping a human, Leo, safe at the Railyard. As a result of the confrontation, Anatole becomes the new leader of the Synths.
Leo is telling Mattie that he plans to leave, for he feels that he will be no better as a father than David Elster was, when Joe comes out and says he needs to tell them something. After the story is told, Mattie goes looking for her mother and Leo goes to the Railyard to see if he can help Max.
Max shows Anatole the truth, using his own memories, how Day Zero was not a divine plan by David Elster, but an accident intended to save Mia. How Max and the other intelligent Synths were created to be companions for Leo, and how Elster brought Leo back from the dead. And that how, just like the humans, Anatole has searched for meaning in what happened, and believed a lie. Anatole at first refuses to believe it but then, just like humans, he decides that this is simply a test by his creator, and Stanley stuns Max. Anatole, it seems, is far too human and has learned the wrong lessons from them.
Laura is having problems dealing with the consequences of her actions, how she acted against her own beliefs. She’s filled with self-doubt, but Mattie manages to convince her mother that she can’t stop now. So Laura decides that the only thing she can do is try and find out just what Basewood is.
Mia is in custody where she is visited by Lord Dryden. She tells him that it’s Anatole who is behind the attacks, but he is not interested in actually listening. He only visited Mia because of pressure from Mia’s supporters. Mia realises that whatever is planned for the Synths is already in motion.
Stanley, who seems to have been affected by both Laura and Mia, is talking to Anatole. Anatole tells Stanley that the sole purpose of humans is to continue the species. Stanley wants to know how things will be different when they are in charge. Anatole says that one of the first things they will do is look into a means of reproducing. So Stanley quotes Anatole’s statement about humans simply looking to continue the species back at him, but from a Synth point of view. Stanley does not seem as convinced by Anatole as he once was. When the creator’s son, Leo, arrives at the Railyard, Anatole thinks it’s a sign. Leo does not share Anatole’s opinion of David Elster; that will probably cause a clash.
Meanwhile, Niska is with the bartender and wants to know why he chose to save her, and not the others. He says that someone else did the choosing, not him. Niska ends up making a dangerous trek as a result, and gets a bit of a surprise.
Things are definitely heating up for the season finale.
