“Episode #3.2” is episode two of season three of Humans.
At the end of the previous episode, the Railyard community where Max’s group of Synths are living was raided by armed police. Max’s girlfriend Flash had already been killed by humans in retaliation for the bombing. Niska was at the Railyard at the time of the raid looking for the Synths (are they actually Synths?) responsible for the bombing of the bar where Astrid worked. Mattie was visiting as well and Leo had been disconnected from the ventilator keeping him breathing, as the power was needed for another Synth. Doing this might have resulted in Leo’s death; not doing it would definitely have resulted in the Synth’s.
The situation was already tense when Agnes, followed by another Synth, decided to disobey the police’s instructions and stand up. The police were moments away from opening fire when Max also stood – and knocked Agnes down. The other Synth also kneeled when Max ordered him to.
Before the police could find Niska, they were called away. A group of Synths was crossing the Channel, and it was believed that these Synths had a connection to those behind the bombing. Four Synths had survived the crossing, and Niska and Mia headed out to help them – despite what Max wished. Niska wants to question the Synths to see if they know anything about the bombing. Mia was also unhappy about the fact that Leo was taken off the ventilator.
Mattie had been keeping Leo breathing and Niska helped before departing. Leo then woke up, and was speaking, much to Anatole’s amazement. Anatole didn’t think that Leo could possibly have intelligence. Anatole also appears to have a religious streak. Matters in the Railyard are getting uncertain for both Leo and Mattie, because Agnes is pressing for less passive resistance and wants to know why Mattie visits.
Laura is serving on the Dryden Commission and has been given an orange eye Synth, Stanley, as a driver, bodyguard and assistant. She is less than happy about this but is told it is non-negotiable – all members of the Commission have been assigned one. Laura does come around to Stanley pretty quickly though.
According to the commission, there are still half a million green eye Synths living in the UK. They have also been put under curfew, after outbreaks of violence against them after the bombing. The UK is being more tolerant than most countries, but less so than the Scandinavians, who are trialling actual integration. Whether the Dryden Commission will actually benefit the Synths is open to question.
Sam is going to school in Waltrincham, the Synth-free community where Joe lives. Given that Joe knows Karen, and that this is not a huge place, them coming into contact seems likely.
The consciousness code deleted itself minutes after being uploaded, and no new Synths are becoming conscious. The Synths cannot procreate, and they will wear out in time. In 50 years, they will all be gone. Matters are definitely getting a lot more potentially violent.
