“Enemy of My Enemy” is episode nine of season four of Fringe.
In Fringe Division, New York, AltBroyles, revealed to be probably a shapeshifter in the previous episode, “Back to Where You’ve Never Been”, is using the security footage to locate where AltLincoln and Fauxlivia had stashed Lincoln. He fills a syringe, but is met on the way by Walternate and Peter. Walternate wants Lincoln released and to speak to AltBroyles in private. He explains that the shapeshifters could be anywhere and that Agent Murphy might have been one. AltBroyles says that AltLincoln and Fauxlivia are heading to the location Murphy called last.
They arrive there and David Robert Jones greets them, having been warned by AltBroyles. He talks about a shapeshifter in a tank and how he loves all his shapeshifters. Then kills her. Because they don’t know what he’s capable of. If he’s willing to do that to someone he loves dearly, imagine what he’d do to people he doesn’t care about.
Olivia arrives in Walter’s lab, looking for Astrid. She has a blood sample she wants checking. And explains she helped Peter and Lincoln cross over. Broyles doesn’t know and they’re late.
On the other side, Fauxlivia and AltLincoln update AltBroyles and explain that the man knew they were coming. Peter is talking to Lincoln. Peter wants to go rather than risk not getting back to his own universe; Lincoln wants to stay and help with this new suspect. Peter doesn’t. Until he sees who it is.
In interrogation, Jones tells AltBroyles that he wants a hard drive bringing to him, one that’s hidden in AltBrandon’s office. They have 12 minutes. Peter and Lincoln enter observation and Peter explains he knows who Jones is. He crossed over. Peter wants to talk to him.
This is allowed. Peter says that Jones isn’t from here; the scars gave him away. For the first time, Jones’s pulse elevates. The last time Peter saw Jones, he was falling apart from molecular transportation. But Jones must have figured a way to heal himself. Jones says he’s never met Peter. He hasn’t, but Peter has met him. He cut Jones in half. Jones says he’s still in one piece. And they’ve run out of time. AltBroyles is told he has a call from a woman. She’s a friend of Mr Jones. She’s a doctor in the ER of a hospital, and she activates a device whilst they’re on the phone and leaves the ER, barring the doors. The people inside die.
Olivia meets Broyles; AltBroyles has told him about Peter and Lincoln. He isn’t happy, but they have something else to deal with first, bringing up the details on David Robert Jones.
There were 16 people in the ER, all dead, and if Jones isn’t released in 14 minutes the next attack will be worse. Walternate orders his release and that he be kept under constant surveillance. AltLincoln suggests monitoring Jones with a tracker. Which he’d slipped into the tea he just gave Jones.
They have the information that was on the hard drive, but it doesn’t mean anything to them. They also have a plan for keeping an eye on Jones, but because AltBroyles is right inside their decision loop, this doesn’t work. However, Peter knows more about what Jones has done in the past, thanks to his own experience, which is an advantage.
