“What on Earth Is Wrong?” is episode five of season one of Extant.
In the previous episode, “Shelter”, Ethan was disabled so that Molly could be captured. She was taken an operating facility on a ship. Molly is currently being operated on and is dreaming. Of being very pregnant and Marcus being there. The day of the accident when Marcus died and the baby was lost. Molly goes with Marcus in the car and notices restraints. There’s a crash and Molly wakes up in bed. Ethan asks if she’s okay; he kept her secret. Then a baby cries and Molly pulls back the covers to reveal Marcus’s corpse.
Ethan and Molly are lying out in the woods and a search party is looking for them. John is the one to find them and paramedics are called. John wants the baby checking on and the other paramedic says they are getting nothing from Ethan. And gets a shock when John turns him over and opens his back. The other is not getting a foetal heartbeat.
Julie, after putting her legs back on, checks her messages and gets one about Ethan and Molly being taken to the mainland. At the hospital, Molly is asking about her baby. She’s rushed off as Julie arrives. John brings Ethan to Julie and explains him; Julie wants to know why they were in the woods. John tells her Ethan got separated; he needs a diagnosis and restart.
John then heads to see Molly. Shortly afterwards, the doctor arrives. He wants to keep her in for observation due to her concussion. As to the baby, there isn’t one. Nor is there any sign she was pregnant. Molly wants to see for herself. She does. No baby. John follows the doctor and says there was a baby. He’s asked if he saw that there was, or was just told there was by Molly. Look for psychological issues, not physical.
Molly is telling her father and wants the test she and John were running. Quinn says the test had shut down; there was an error with the sample. Sparks had cancelled it. John returns; Molly assumes the doctor said she was crazy. Molly says the ISEA did this; they took the baby out and covered it up. It sounds paranoid. It’s also true. John tells her Ethan may remember what happened. Molly remembers Sam saw the scan and knows she was pregnant.
Ethan is being worked on. Julie isn’t happy he was in the woods, exposed to risk. It seems Ethan also needs more work on to restore him. Sparks is being told there is no issue keeping it alive outside the mother; it’s thriving.
Molly and John arrive at Sam’s. Sam, clearly not looking forward to this, opens the door. Sam makes out she didn’t know Molly was pregnant, and that no-one is listening. That she didn’t send a text message, which has now gone. Molly should return to the hospital. Molly tells Sam they’d better have a gun to her head. They do, in a way; Sparks found out about Sam’s brother and his past trouble – he killed someone. When Molly leaves, Sam tells John Molly has a brain issue. Outside, Molly tells John they got to Sam to make her look crazy. She’s right; Sam was gotten to and Molly does now look crazy.
John’s only knowledge of the baby only comes from Molly, and she now looks crazy. The only other person who could prove the pregnancy was Sam, and she’s been got at. Ethan might know the truth, but he’s been badly damaged and, even if he does recover, will he still remember what happened?
