“The Other” is episode seven of season two of Extant.
Toby gets in his car to find JD in the backseat. They’re going for a drive.
A woman is talking to Velez, through a translation program, about her baby and how he grew so fast. And told her he had to go because they were calling him. Velez asks who was calling. The Devil.
Charlie is going to activate one of the new Humanichs. Ethan is pleased, because his family is getting bigger. And Charlie is Ethan’s best human friend. He’s never lied to Ethan, reprogrammed him or gone away. Lucy asks if the first doesn’t have a name. Not yet. Would she like to do the honours? Lucy names him Lucas, and Charlie activates him.
Toby is brought to see Molly. In the previous episode, “You Say You Want an Evolution”, the Offspring had told her the Hybrids wanted to exist in peace. Toby thinks this is the end of the human race if they do. Molly suggests it could be a new beginning. Toby thinks the Hybrids are still a threat. Molly says they’re no longer killing woman; they’ve evolved. They’re also half human. She wants to broker a peace conference. Before Toby unleashes the virus to destroy the Hybrids. Toby made her lie to Congress, and Molly will tell the truth about what he knew; if he doesn’t agree, he will lose everything.
Toby returns to the GSC and Velez wants to show him something. The interview with the woman from earlier. Who said her hair and fingernails were growing fast and she was hearing voices in her head, telling her to do shameful things. The woman, Mei Fong, wondered if her son was the devil. Nate is running various things.
JD takes Molly to a storage place he has out in the woods. Stuff for a rainy day. So they can be ready for Toby. Molly says Toby isn’t evil; he’s… complicated.
Toby is holding a meeting. Molly thinks the Hybrids no longer pose an immediate threat and wants a detente. A sit-down to find a way to coexist in peace. Toby does not. They have the virus and the Humanichs; this ends now. If Molly stands with the enemy, she’ll be treated like the enemy,
JD and Molly have stopped on the road. Molly thinks it’s unusually quiet. They haven’t seen anyone or any cars for some time. JD had noticed. They check and find a news article about a lockdown because of terrorists. Said terrorists being JD and Molly. Toby discredited them before they could discredit him.
Lucy and Lucas are talking; Ethan asks if they really have the same memories. He wants some memories with them too. Lucy notices something about an expiration date being active before they get notified about the lockdown.
JD and Molly return to the Hybrids. One of them., Eris, objects to listening to JD. He wants to leave, to scatter and propagate until the odds are in their favour. Then let the humans decide; whether to live in the Hybrids’ world or die in their own. Eris is going to be trouble. JD says that if one person leaves, the GSC will be led back to them.
Lucy enters Charlie’s office; she wants to know if Lucas and her can go home with Charlie and Ethan. Charlie doesn’t think Lucas is ready, but agrees that Lucy can come. Lucy also wants to know what the expiration date is. Charlies explains; John wanted Humanichs to have the full human experience. A built-in program to let them expire. Humans die, and so will Humanichs. Lucy asks why Humanichs should have to do.
Nate has studied Mei Fong. She has a triple helix. She will be a Hybrid soon. He doesn’t know if all women who bore Hybrid children will become that way. Mei Fong had a rare genetic marker. Toby wants the other employees of the GDC running. Molly had that marker too.
Things are getting rather messy. Lucy seems like she might be up to something, Toby wants to wipe out all the Hybrids and, given that the Offspring is one of the few older ones who definitely wants peaceful coexistence, he may well have a point.
