“Morphoses” is episode two of season two of Extant.
At the Global Security Commission, Molly’s general friend, Toby, gives the go-ahead for Alpha Team to proceed towards the target. The Offspring. An adult now. It does not go well for the team; they massacre each other. At one of the funerals, he’s told that Molly is out.
In the previous episode, “Change Scenario”, JD got Molly out of the facility as the material witness to a homicide. He’s now taking her back, because she mentioned aliens. Molly asks him what happens to his case, then. JD wants her to take her meds; it might make the Martians go away. Molly declines. JD says he’s responsible for her; take the meds. Molly takes them – and chucks them away. She tells JD he signed her out because she’s his only hope to solve the case. So, she needs to think clearly. No meds. JD wants Molly to start talking. She wants feeding first.
Ethan is at Julie’s home. He’s not happy. He doesn’t want breakfast; he wants his parents. Julie tells him that’s not possible. His dad is gone. Murdered, essentially, though that may not be known yet. Ethan says his mother is alive. Yes, but not able to take care of him right now. Ethan asks if he can go home when she’s better. Julie says they’ll see. And pretty soon this will feel like home. Ethan disagrees. He doesn’t want to go with Julie to the lab, either.
Molly is tucking into some food and JD asks how she knew the victim was pregnant. Molly recognised the symptoms. JD asks where. And don’t say aliens. Molly says an old friend, an astronaut, was impregnated in space. JD asks by whom. Molly points out he told her not to say it. He does know she’s an astronaut, right? She spent a lot of time in deep space, seeing organisms adapt to survive. She came across an alien spore that made its way back. JD can put a spore in a line-up. Molly says the spore could have infected a human, and then that human could impregnate women. They need a blood sample from the victim.
At the lab, Julie is told by a woman, Anna, that they need to see a test today. If Julie says it’s impossible, they will find someone else.
The victim’s doctor tells JD and Molly he never got a blood test. She had decided to abort, but didn’t show. There’s a good chance the father was a casual acquaintance. Molly asks if there was anything unusual about the pregnancy. Was the baby’s growth accelerated? It was. The doctor assumed a mistake had been made with the date, at first. But a colleague across town mentioned a similar case. This morning.
They go see the pregnant woman, Lucy. Who is married. She looks nervous, though, and Molly drops her drink to get the partner to leave. Then starts quizzing the woman, saying that the man isn’t the father. And she’s been seeing dead people. If she doesn’t terminate, she’s going to die.
JD is complaining about Molly’s behaviour with Lucy when they arrive at Molly’s home. He thinks she needs her meds; they are going to go back now. Not before Molly has a shower.
Julie and Charlie are arguing over Ethan. Julie hasn’t told Ethan that Molly isn’t coming home. Charlie thinks Ethan needs to know the truth.
Molly has had a shower and has brought beers for her and JD. They chat, but Molly had drugged JD’s drink.
Ethan is having problems coping, and Julie has an idea. It might not be a good one. She’s also seeing what she’s really gotten into. JD doesn’t believe in aliens – though in this case they do exist. Not as little green men, though. Molly is having problems, too. Probably not related to the psych hold she was put on. And Toby is told to use fairly extreme measures to deal with the Offspring.
