“Incursion” is episode seven of season one of Extant.
In the previous episode, “More in Heaven and Earth”, Molly was warned, presumably, by her baby that security forces were incoming. Then she was got away by Kern and Kryger. They arrive at her home; Molly asks how do they know they weren’t followed. Because it would be Kern’s job to send a team if they were. Molly wants to know the truth. Kern explains that Sparks was bringing her in to extract the Offspring – that’s what they call it – but Molly fleeing meant they had to improvise. Sparks might seem as if he’s in charge, but Kern is sure that someone outside the ISEA is pulling strings. He doesn’t know who. But whoever it was outfitted a hospital, removed evidence of Molly’s pregnancy and put her back on the island. Ethan was used to lure her into the woods. Molly asks about the baby; is it alive? Yes, and it’s a he.
Julie is getting ready for bed when there’s a knock on her door. She thinks it’s Odin but it’s John. John had tried to get into Ethan’s governors, but couldn’t and he assumes that Julie was the one who blocked his access. She’s not. It must be Ethan. John asks why. Julie asks why the most advanced AI on the planet would want to stop John from hobbling his mind. Put like that…
Kern is telling Molly that the baby is growing fast. An alien intelligence beyond their comprehension is being treated like a lab rat. Kryger tells Molly she’s not its mother; she was its host. Kern seems less worried by the baby than Kryger does. Molly wants to rescue the baby. Then John returns.
John suggest Molly report Sparks to the ISEA board, using the Aruna file as proof. Molly asks what if Sparks buries everything. At least it would be over, though. Outside, Kern and Kryger are talking. Kern used to be an MP and he says one thing doesn’t change. If you lock someone up who doesn’t belong there, they have a lot to say when he’s let out. Sparks is handling this the wrong way.
Yasumoto is brought out of whatever tank he’s kept in and then speaks to Sparks. Sparks tells him that Claypool is compromised; Molly breached security and hot away. The entire op is at risk and they need to eliminate that risk. Molly is smart and a viable threat to the Offspring. Yasumoto is concerned what might happen if they eliminate the Offspring’s mother. And he’s dying. The substance that sustains him is nearly exhausted and hasn’t been reproduced. Sparks suggests sending another mission. No; they have something more valuable. They found the entity at the same location as the substance. That can’t be a coincidence. Yasumoto knows Sparks is seeing Katie. They both need the Offspring. Relocate to the contingency site, but don’t harm Molly. Until they know the Offspring has no use for its mother.
In the morning, John tells Molly that he’s locked out of Ethan’s neural net. Ethan isn’t home; he’s gone out on his bike to the park. Where he sees two older kids disable a bot. Then they try to steal his bike, pushing him down. And damaging his face. When John arrives, Ethan wants to take the damaged bot with them.
Sparks tells Kern they are moving the Offspring to the contingency site. And it’s time to eliminate the security threat. Not what Yasumoto told him. Molly is heading to meet the board with the Aruna file when Kern approaches. They don’t have to go in to get the Offspring; he’s being brought out. So, they plan a heist. The Offspring has its own plans, though, and its already very powerful. Kern is probably right that annoying it is a very bad idea.
