“Double Vision” is episode twelve of season two of Extant.
Secretary Stanton is talking to the president about finding Molly. Molly, JD and Ethan are in JD’s car. And someone is making a noose and drinking.
Stanton speaks to Lucy about Osama Bin Laden. The important part being the mission against him was successful. What are the Humanichs doing about this mission? Lucy tells her there will be 1,000 more Humanichs on the street by tomorrow.
Ethan opens Julie’s door when they arrive, saying she won’t mind. Someone, most likely Charlie, is hanging from the light fitting.
Humanichs are patrolling a market that JD’s ex, Dorothy, is shopping at, when an injured Terra bumps into her. Terra knows who she is and says that Dorothy knew her father, Adhu. Dorothy hustles Terra away from the patrolling Humanichs.
Charlie has been taken down and Ethan asks if he’s dead. No. Just drunk. Charlie is asked why he did it and he says Julie is dead. It’s his fault.
TAALR is telling Lucy that Nicholas Calderon has been caught, but he exposed himself to get something from a safe deposit box that TAALR believes Calderon gave to Molly, and that may be of concern to them. TAALR assumes this poses a serious threat. He has one recommendation that should get the job done.
In the previous episode, “Zugzwang”, Lucy locked Julie away in a box and told Charlie he’d never find her. Ethan asks if it’s possible she’s still alive. It’s possible. JD asks if there were clues or demands. No; Lucy just told Charlie his punishment would be never knowing what happened to Julie. He created Lucy and unleashed a monster. Molly asks him what if he could destroy the monster.
They tell Charlie about TAALR – he describes it as an artificial super intelligence in control of an army of highly skilled killer robots. Calderon gave them a map to where TAALR’s main server is. Which is heavily guarded. JD asks if they could just blow up the building. Charlie tells him no; it would take down the entire infrastructure of the Western world. Which is an incredibly stupid design. This has to be surgical and Charlie says it would need a power grid shutdown and someone on the inside.
Ethan is shown to Stanton’s office at the GSC. Lucy is there and greets him. Stanton suggests they go out, but tells Lucy to stay. She does want Lucy to tap into any communications.
JD tells the other two that Ethan is in, then gets a call from Dorothy. He says Dorothy has Terra; JD will go and get them. Charlie has a visor for Molly for a virtual chat room. It can’t be intercepted, but it can be traced in 45 seconds.
Ethan has told Stanton everything. He wants Stanton to prove she’s honourable by shaking hands, then hands her the visor. In the virtual chat room, Molly tells her that Toby was killed by a drone sent by the GSC. All drones have a transponder code; check the flight log. The GSC is running a trace. Molly explains that TAALR created the threat to create a demand for Humanichs. Molly has a shutdown created by John and Calderon in case TAALR ever went off the rails. But she needs help. Molly disconnects before the call can be traced and Ethan is gone, leaving behind a message to check the drone logs, when Stanton removes the visor.
JD returns with Terra and Dorothy; Terrals wound is a graze by a bullet. Ethan and Charlie return; Charlie sees the blood trail and assumes it’s Julie, but is told it’s Terra.
TAALR has a new project to, presumably, deal with Molly. Stanton has the drone logs checked and discovers a drone was active when Toby was killed, but no-one authorised it. Then she’s told that a virus is missing; the original one that killed humans and hybrids.
They’re planning to take down TAALR, but TAALR is also making plans. And may well be inside some of the decision loops.
