“Care and Feeding” is episode nine of season one of Extant.
Sparks is looking at the vision of his daughter he saw in the previous episode, “Incursion”. When he looks down and up, she’s become a child again. Sparks sees the Offspring, hiding, and Katie tells him the Offspring is scared and wants Sparks to help. He wants out. If Sparks takes him, Katie can come too.
Molly wants to know why Kryger shot at the vessel that, as it happened, used to house the Offspring. Kryger tells her to look what it did. It caused all the armed guards to shoot each other. If it gets out in the world, there will be more deaths. It’s not Molly’s baby; it’s a nightmare. Kryger uses Kern’s fingerprints to lock Molly inside the room.
Ethan is looking at the damaged bot and Odin tells him that busted doesn’t mean broken, showing Ethan his arm. He tells Ethan he was a soldier, that was his purpose, but when he lost the arm, he was sent home. Odin had been one thing for so long, he didn’t know how to be anything else. But he likes his new arm better, demonstrating with a lighter. Julie tells them dinner is waiting.
At Claypool, Kryger runs into the garage. Kern is behind him and asks where Molly is; Kryger says she’s already out. What happened? Kern tells him that Sparks figured it out when Kryger used Kern’s prints in the lift. Kern also says that Sparks took the Offspring.
Sparks calls Yasumoto and tells him Claypool is compromised. The Offspring escaped. Sparks has failed so many times he doesn’t think he’s the right man for this job any more. Sparks ends the call, breaks his phone and removes the transponder from his car. Yasumoto, goes to see John, who has come there for Yasumoto’s help because Molly is in danger.
Sparks has headed to a place that, by the sounds of it, he used to stay with Katie when she was a child. He grabs some drinks on the way to one of the cabins.
Yasumoto is telling one of his security guards that Molly never came home. She may be still in the building. If she is, bring her back alive. And what about the Offspring? He’s told they lost it when Sparks disabled the transponder in his car.
Yasumoto re-joins John, who says he doesn’t know how far this goes. That’s why he came to Yasumoto. Not realising that Yasumoto is the one behind it all. Yasumoto tells John that if what he’s saying is true, it will change everything. As a man of science, he must appreciate that. Currently, John is a man trying to protect his family. Yasumoto thinks Ethan should come here, so he’s safe. He insists.
Sparks is talking to Katie, who he has tucked into bed. She asks him to leave the door open. The Offspring – and the bed is naturally empty – sneaks out through the open door. Sparks uses an emergency phone to call his wife, to tell her there’s been a new development with Katie. He can’t explain over the phone, but if she comes, he will never call her again.
The Offspring is watching the woman who runs the place, who sees his eyes. She turns to run and bumps into Sparks. She thought it was a coyote who used to come around.
Odin is telling Ethan a story, reminiscing it sounds like. Ethan thinks he needs a flip, and explains that every couple of days he needs to change his power core. Julie knows how. Odin offers to help. Or he could get Julie. Ethan talks him through how to do it. Odin does it properly, but given he apparently is part of a group opposed to AIs and computers, Ethan might actually be safer at Yasumoto Tower. Well, except for the fact that Femi Dodd is part of the same group.
Molly is trying to escape whilst Yasumoto’s men are trying to find her. Kryger and Kern are looking for Sparks; Kryger wants to kill the Offspring. He thinks it’s too dangerous. He may have a point – but the Offspring may be too dangerous to kill.
