“Time’s Up” is episode six of season one of Continuum.
In the previous episode, “A Test of Time”, whilst everyone was threatening each others’ ancestors, Travis killed Kellog’s grandmother. But nothing happened to Kellog. According to Alec, this doesn’t help prove anything; she might not have been his grandmother after all, or maybe there is something else going on. Perhaps they are in a different timeline. Kagame does not seem happy about Travis’ actions however; he had given his word and didn’t like to see it broken.
As usual, this episode opens in the future. There’s a riot going on and Liber8 are supposed to be involved. There seems to be food that was being stolen which hasn’t been distributed as was supposed to be though.
Back in the present and Kiera gets a call, after which she hides the piece of the time device that she took from evidence in “Wasting Time”. There’s a protest going on and Kiera is surprised that the city is just letting them demonstrate; Carlos says that they don’t show force unless it escalates. The protesters are demanding for transparency and accountability for corporations. Alec’s stepbrother Julian is meeting some people who then mask up and go and join the demonstration, turning it into a full-on riot. Kagame would appear to be involved behind the scenes in some way, and Travis kidnaps the CEO of the corporation that the protesters were demonstrating outside. Liber8 then gets her to read a statement with a web video. The next video is a demand for a ransom.
Alec gets Cameron a lead on the head of the attackers but the fairly uncooperative head of the corporation’s security gets there first. Alec also spots Julian on the video. His stepfather doesn’t agree with the actions of the demonstrators, but understands them. He also uses how they organised the riot over social media as an example to Alec as to why technology is bad. He doesn’t approve of the use of violence to achieve their aims.
Kiera suggests that they assemble the $20 million ransom but before it’s delivered everyone starts getting text messages related to the kidnapping. Then they get instructed to go, with the ransom, to the plaza outside the targeted corporation. Then give it to all the demonstrators outside the building, or the CEO dies. These messages are also going to everyone, so it’s not like it could be hidden.
Liber8 are definitely playing some sort of game, but what their intention is, or what they hope to gain from their actions takes a while to be revealed. Kagame does want to build up a new following for Liber8 in the past. Present. Whatever. Of course, what makes things interesting is that Liber8 do have a point with some of their accusations, even if there’s a problem with their methods.
