“Second Truths” is episode six of season two of Continuum.
In the previous episode, “Second Opinion”, Inspector Dillon was replaced and a investigation was done into how information was leaked to Liber8 about Travis’ transport, leading to his escape, in “Split Second”. Kiera, once she finally got her emotions under control, told them to look on Betty’s computer for a Trojan that was feeding information to Liber8. Which put Betty in the clear. Yet at the end of the episode she met with Lucas. Betty had claimed she went to a Liber8 meeting on Dillon’s request, but no proof was found of this, so is she actually dealing with Liber8 or is did Dillon genuinely request she go to them and this is part of it? Kellog, who Alec is now in business with, might be up to something.
As always so far, the episode opens in the future. Kiera is at the CPS. There have been thirteen murders in the past few years, with their eyes burnt out to foil retinal scans. The murders occurred outside the city, and its cameras, so good old fashioned police work is called for, according to Kiera’s boss, and she’s it, as she has an apparent gift for deductive reasoning. She finds a similarity to another cold case in the past.
In the present there’s a dead body with the eyelids removed – a victim from the cold case Kiera looked at in the future. A case that was never solved in Kiera’s future, but one that Carlos had investigated previously, before the killer had stopped killing. Which immediately raises a problem – if Kiera manages to solve this, changing the past, what will happen to her future? Will she even able to help solve it? The killer removes the victim’s eyelids before killing them and then posing them. Kiera also has information about the case that the others don’t, especially about the fact that the victims all had a connection. The problem is getting others to see it. She’s getting so lucky that it seems suspicious.
Alec is coming back from a date, where they had seen a film on time travel. His date is talking about the problems with the time travel in the film, and with paradoxes. Unfortunately, neither really has a place where they can be alone. His date, Emily, suggests Alec’s lab, but that’s a secret. One that he becomes willing to share.
Kellog is meeting another person with an invention that he knows will be really valuable. In the future.
Dillon requests a meeting with Kiera. It seems he is in the private sector now, and he has arranged for Kiera to see the mysterious Escher.
