“Blind Spot” is episode four of season one of Colony.
The episode opens with helmet video, with the helmet being worn by a Redhat. A group of them are heading out and they arrive at a school, demanding to know what room a teacher is in. They enter her classroom, where she appears to be teaching on Fahrenheit 451. When one of the kids protests one Redhat hits him in the face with the butt of his rifle and another slams the teacher’s face into her desk. She is then bundled into their vehicle. At the end of the day, the person whose camera view was watched removes his helmet, placing it in his locker pointing at his head, then removes his balaclava, revealing that it’s Broussard.
Maddie is carefully dressing and, when finished, removes the insulin for her son, Hudson, out of the fridge. After giving him it, he asks if they are going to run out of medicine.
Quayle arrives at a Resistance place with a rucksack, where he speaks to Broussard. Broussard has identified that Homeland uses the same groups of guys in the same concentration every time they move a VIP. Quayle says that they will prepare to take an opportunity that arises, then hands over the rucksack. It seems Katie has a plan; Broussard is convinced it will work.
Maddie enters the main part of the house and Katie comments on her appearance. When Will arrives at the DHS, he goes to see Phyllis, who has asked to talk to him. She shows Will a chart that has everything they know about the LA insurgency – which appears to be a bunch of separate groups. When Will asks if Phyllis thinks the cells are all separate, she doe says she does, despite what Snyder and the others want to believe about a supervillain. Reality is more complicated.
Will asks who Geronimo is and Phyllis thinks that is a very good question. She has never shown him the chart before, because he was forced to take the job, even if he had legitimate reasons for doing so. Morality is more complicated in their position. Phyllis was in Iraq after the invasion and, in retrospect, thinks they had a limited window of opportunity before things went to pieces. It wasn’t taken, and a million people essentially died for nothing. Currently, the Resistance is just a nuisance, but in six months, if they coalesce around Geronimo, they could be dangerous and do real damage, but not to the visitors. If they did manage to hurt the visitors, retribution would rain down on everyone. Resistance is not viable.
Katie is saying goodbye to Lindsay who is leaving with Hudson and Gracie. She then wanders around the house, picking up a doll then removing a photo from the wall. Then turns on an outside light. A figure is seen moving past the window, then there is the sound of breaking glass followed by that of flames. Katie retrieves a fire extinguisher then counts to ten before using it. The photo she took from the wall would have been damaged by the fire if left where it was. Katie then calls Will at work.
When Will arrives, Beau and Jennifer are inside and Redhats are searching the house. Protocol. An Indian head penny was found within the remains. Presumably a message from Geronimo; Will wonders how the Resistance knew he was working for their team. Jennifer wants Katie to come to the DHS for questioning; Will objects but Katie agrees. As Katie is lead through the place by Phyllis, she carefully looks at everything.
Phyllis guarantees that Katie and her family will be safe. By essentially terrifying the neighbours into watching out for them by holding them all personally responsible for anything happening. Phyllis then asks Katie a bunch of questions; she seems to be picking holes in Katie’s story and gives the impression she doesn’t believe it all. Which may be just a trick.
After the interview, Phyllis speaks to Will. She says that she has always been valued for her ability to see the truth, which has proven harder since the Arrival. Everyone lies. They are told lies about their hosts and are then forced to regurgitate those lies. People lie out of fear and to protect themselves. With lying this pervasive, it is harder to see the truth. In the previous episode, “98 Seconds”, Bram was seen taping Geronimo’s radio broadcasts, and the Redhats found the tapes. If Phyllis logs them into the system, there will be nothing she can do. If they are sitting in her drawer, nothing will happen. She advises Will to go home and make sure they weren’t the only thing he missed.
The reason Maddie was dressed up was she was heading to the Green Zone to apply for a job, in order to ensure a supply of insulin. Lindsay comments to Katie that it was lucky Katie asked her to take the kids to the park; they are perhaps a few too many coincidences related to the firebombing. Katie reiterates to Quayle that her husband not be harmed; he is proving rather too good at his job. Will talks to Bram about the tapes; Bram didn’t think they were a big deal. They were.
