“Who Are You?” is episode four of season one of Batwoman.
At night, a woman descends on a zip line into a building. She has feathers and claws on her nails and descends over a jewellery display which she opens, removing the jewellery inside. When a security guard enters, she throws explosives at him.
Sophie is listening to Vesper Fairchild on the radio, who is saying that this is the third bling theft this week and this time a guard was nearly killed. So, where is Batwoman? Curling her hair, choosing between red lipstick shades? Getting over a break-up. Kate turns off the radio; she’s actually with Reagan, who she met in the previous episode, “Down Down Down”. However, Luke sends her a message, asking Kate where she is, because it’s urgent. Reagan asks who it is. A friend type of thing. No, not a girlfriend, a guy friend who she shares office space with. The… water main broke. Reagan thinks that sounds really serious. Yes; Kate should probably go.
Kate is telling Bruce about hurting me with truth, not comforting me with a lie; yes, she’s quoting Rihanna. Kate’s never hidden who she is and isn’t a liar, so how can she hide who she is? In Bruce’s office, Roxanna from the Museum of Antiquities is there; she’s very grateful that they are lending her Martha Wayne’s necklace. Luke talks about the Magpie; she struck again, nearly killing a security guard. This lending of Martha’s necklace is not why he called, though.
Why he called is Dodgson. He doesn’t seem to be looking too good. Kate captured him in “The Rabbit Hole” to question. She says he stays until he tells them Alice’s grand plan. Or until he dies, according to Luke. He’s just dehydrated is Kate’s response. No; he’s septic. Kate wonders if Luke was this annoying when Batman took prisoners. Then an alarm sounds and Kate agrees that Dodgson needs an ER.
A backhoe is digging up a grave – Beth’s grave – and Catherine is watching. She returns to her car only to be greeted by Alice and her gang. Alice asks Catherine if her husband knows what is buried in plot 283? Bad guys are tragically predictable. Alice left cards with those numbers on in the Kane penthouse and she knew Catherine would follow them back here. In return for keeping this to herself, Alice wants a very powerful toy that Hamilton Dynamics is working on. And of course Catherine knows the project; it was her idea. Alice did spend an hour in Catherine’s house after all and she wasn’t just looking at shoes. Get the weapon to her by 10 PM tomorrow or Commander Kane will learn how Catherine convinced him his daughter was dead.
Mary is in her clinic when Kate appears, in her Batwoman costume. After a brief moment of shock, Mary starts totally fangirling. Kate uses a voice changer and explains she needs Mary’s help. With Dodgson. Mary points out that Dodgson did just try to kill her. That’s not her saying no; it’s slightly more complicated. Kate wants him alive to know what Alice is planning. His leg is grossly infected and Kate will be back for him. Mary says they will be there. Hopefully alive.
Kate has decided that she needs to restore Gotham’s confidence in the Bat by catching its most dangerous criminal. Luke contacts her; he’s worked out how to find her. When the Magpie tries descending for an egg, her line is severed. Kate tells her she’s really committed to this whole bird thing. Magpie suggests they team up; Kate says she’s allergic to feathers. Turns out, she’s not kidding. Magpie escapes and Kate fails to catch the Batarang, which smashes a vase.
This was caught on security footage and Vesper Fairchild starts laying into Batwoman on the radio. Kate herself tells Luke the Batarang is broken; he suggests she miscalculated. She accuses him of Batsplaining. Luke has analysed something that Kate managed to snatch off Magpie’s belt. A grenade. Which leads to a technical discussion of type. Luke will have an answer in an hour and a half and Kate heads out on a lunch date. The lunch date is with Regan but, before this can get anywhere, Luke contacts Kate again. An… electrical fire. Kate, before she leaves, asks Reagan to be her date for the museum event.
Before Kate gets back, there is a security alert for Bruce’s office and, when Luke heads there, the Magpie takes him down and steals Martha’s necklace. Luke explains to Kate that Bruce spent years looming for the necklace and spent over a million dollars buying it back when he found it. He does have a lead on the bomb. Its 3D printed with explosive ink. Only a few companies sell that and the Crows track it. Kate should contact Sophie. Kate says that it’s bad timing. Luke weighs bad timing up against a bomber being loose in the city. Kate heads to speak to Sophie.
Catherine sends some goons after Alice, and they come off second best. Alice decides to show Catherine that she isn’t playing games. Kate thinks that Sophie believes she’s Batwoman, and asks how Bruce made two identities look so easy. He didn’t, according to Luke. It made him miserable. In the last few months, he seemed to find it easier being the Batman than Bruce Wayne. Kate is really not good at lying and this causes relationship problems. She does, as Batwoman, have an unusual interrogation method for non-criminals. Apparently, Batman never posed for selfies.
Luke needs work on leading with important stuff – that something will blow up needs bringing up at the start of the conversation, not the end. Kane is starting to doubt that Beth is truly dead and Sophie dug up evidence that the bomb used on Alice’s prison convoy used technology from Hamilton Dynamics. Something is going to come out. Mary is a lot smarter than she looks, or acts, and might be one of the first to figure out that Kate is Batwoman at this rate.
