“Through the Looking-Glass” is episode sixteen of season one of Batwoman.
Kane is digging a grave for Cartwright, who Kate had throttled in the previous episode, “Off with Her Head”, after telling him she was everything he took from her sister. Alice and Kate are watching; Alice says it’s ironic that the monster who ripped their family apart brought them back together. Kate is her hero. Alice goes to help fill the hole and Kane tells Kate not to waste her guilt on a man who doesn’t deserve it. Kate asks if they should pretend it didn’t happen. Alice has tried that. It doesn’t work.
Alice wants to find Mouse. Kane suggests they find him together. Alice thinks they have very different ideas as to what to do with Mouse after they find him. She starts leaving and Kane goes for his gun – which Alice has taken. She tells her father and sister that both their DNA is on the body in the grave and it’s best if she disappears into the shadows so no-one else finds out about it. Kate sees the Batsignal is up; as Batwoman, though, she gets a little too violent and starts hyperventilating afterwards. Back at the Batcave Luke asks if there are any leads on Cartwright. Evidently Kate hasn’t told him what happened. He gets a message; the date of the trial of Reggie Harris, the man found guilty of killing Luke’s father, has been moved up to today.
Alice is at her lair, calling out for her evil henchman. Then finds a leg trap. Then all the henchman dead in similar traps. Finally, an open trap with a message in it: ‘Did you think I would forget? Your friend from Coryana.’
Commander Kane is meeting with Sophie. In “Grinning from Ear to Ear” he reached out to her because he couldn’t trust anyone at the Crows. Footage from Lucius Fox’s murder was missing from the crime scene and the Crows sent a $50K clean-up fee to the owner. Sophie asks if he thinks the Crows paid her to lose the tapes. That’s what she’s to figure out.
Kate is at The Hold Up, avoiding answering the phone to Sophie and remembering killing Cartwright when Alice rolls up. She needs Kate’s assistance finding Mouse. Kate says they are done. Alice says she’s forgiving Mouse for trying to do kill her and choosing to see the best in him. Has Kate tried that? All the time. It never worked. Alice is concerned about what Mouse might do under the effects of the fear toxin. Once she has Mouse, she will flee for good. Because all her cats and rabbits are dead. Subtlety is not a defining characteristic of someone she wronged in the past. If Kate helps, she will never have to see Alice again. Kate wants it doing her way. Given Kate’s way ended in Cartwright’s death, Alice loves it.
Commander Kane tells Kate that Mouse assaulted a nurse outside Arkham. Alice tells Kate that Dr Butler experimented on Mouse at Arkham with the fear toxin. Kate and Alice head to a former nurse, pretending to be undercover Crows. A difficult pretence for Alice.
Mary has gone to court and sits next to Luke. Sophie has headed to the shop owner’s apartment and finds the door open. Inside, the woman is lying on the floor, dead. From a sniper’s bullet. Rather suspicious on and of itself. Then Sophie is targeted by the sniper as well. She’s tackled out of the way by Julia Pennyworth. Julia explains that the SRS discovered there’s a bounty on Sophie’s head. Yes, Julia knows who Sophie is. Kate Kane’s ex. Because Julia is too. She’d be happy to discuss it, but the bullet intended for Sophie hit Julia in the arm.
Alice is struggling to be normal as they are waiting in the nurse’s home. Mouse turns up outside, then the Crows do as well, and he’s taken into custody. Kate says she didn’t call her father. She didn’t; the nurse did. And she’s pointing a shotgun at Kate and Alice. Who take her down.
With Mouse heading to Arkham, Alice wants to break him out. She needs Kate’s help – where he is being kept requires two keys to be turned at the same time. Kate realises that Alice pushed Kate into killing Cartwright, but agrees to help.
Reggie Harris ends up with a retrial date, which is no surprise. Especially given the timing of a professional hit on the shop’s owner. But who could be behind this? It’s not just a crooked cop, DA and judge, all of whom have been dealt with. Then there’s Alice’s friend from Coryana. Kate is also having doubts.
