“A Lesson from Professor Pyg” is episode five of season three of Batwoman.
Sophie is with her new roomie. Alice. Sophie insists she isn’t a roomie; she’s a military trained babysitter making sure that Alice receives her proper medication, as was agreed in the previous episode, “Antifreeze”. They hear someone on the balcony. Both grab an empty bottle, then squabble over Alice drinking Sophie’s wine. It’s Ryan, as Batwoman; she’s there for Alice. Renee has something.
Which is a dead, mostly naked, man strung up in a garage. Renee thinks that Catwoman’s bullwhip has been used. Alice says they found it; time to go. Ryan doesn’t think it is, though. Batman and Catwoman had a thing, according to Luke, and she stole nanotech and made the whip indestructible. This one isn’t. The body will go to Mary; Alice will look for the killer. Ryan has to deal with Jada Jet.
In the office, Luke says the stock has done, the crisis team has quit and the company is in the red for the first time ever. Mary arrives, asking why Ryan didn’t throw out the dinner invite that Jada sent. Ryan is going to go, because Alice found a link between the Black Gloves and Jeturian. Mary points out that Alice is hallucinating so badly they had to pull her out of an insane asylum. Ryan needs to find something to hold over Jada, by bugging her office. Mary doesn’t think it’s that easy. Mary is also extremely thirsty. Ryan is taking backup.
Which is Sophie. Alice calls it a date. Sophie disagrees. Alice says the way Sophie is dressed, it’s a date. Renee also wants to see Alice. Ryan and Sophie arrive at Jada’s house. Ryan feels intimidated. Sophie tells her it’s deliberate. And introduces herself to Jada as Ryan’s girlfriend. The butler tells the chef there’s another for dinner. The chef cuts the head off a suckling pig and starts talking to it. Not a good sign.
Things are awkward between Ryan, Sophie and Jada. Sophie excuses herself and Ryan asks why she’s there. To be told to keep away from Marquis. She needs to get real. Or dying will be the easy part for Ryan and a lot of others if she doesn’t do exactly what Jada says. Then Marquis arrives with a date.
Sophie plants a bug in Jada’s office, checking in with Luke. she also decides to have a poke around, and finds a person whose image in a photo is hidden. She’s sending it to Luke when the feed goes down. Jada finds Sophie to tell her dinner is ready; Sophie claims to be lost. Marquis is complaining to Ryan for meeting their mother behind his back.
Alice is with Renee. Renee has a collection of files on every rogue that’s tormented Gotham. Look through them to see if she can find out who killed the man. Alice discovers Poison Ivy’s file. It’s a lot thicker than any of the others. She thinks Renee is looking for one specific person, not the trophies. She thinks right.
Dinner is going awkwardly. Marquis’s date, Zoey, excuses herself and heads to the bathroom. Where she’s not feeling well. Then attacked with a meat cleaver by the chef who’s now wearing a stitched together pig’s head. Everyone else is starting to have problems when the chef arrives. He says it’s just a little paralytic. Well, maybe a lot. His name is Lazlo Valentine. He used to be a chef in the dining hall at Jada’s office. She fired him, he lost everything including his family. Now he’s going to make Jada lose hers. He told Marquis and is going to chop him into bits. Ryan manages to stab him in the leg with a knife. The others are trying to leave whilst Ryan heads to find Zoey. Who’s dead.
The dinner party guests are locked in with no phone service. Ryan and Sophie could probably take Lazlo – Professor Pyg – down. If they weren’t full of paralytic. As Ryan says, it was memorable. Alice is still having hallucinations. Mary is getting increasingly obsessed with plants. It looks like the latest incarnations of at least one, and perhaps two, of Batman’s foes are surfacing. But no need to be serious about it!
