“Under the Night” is episode one of season one of Andromeda.
At the start of this episode, Dylan Hunt is a captain in the High Guard of the Systems Commonwealth, a multi-species, multi-galaxy political entity, commanding the ship Andromeda Ascendant.
The ship is called in by a distress call from an inhabited planet due to a rogue black hole (another cosmic plughole) that’s threatening to destroy the world. It’s a trap launched by the Nietzscheans, who have been engineered for superiority and are believers of the concept of supermen according to Friedrich Nietzsche. The Nietzscheans (who are, of course, the supermen) object to the policies of the Commonwealth and are attempting to overthrow it.
Most of Hunt’s crew is forced to abandon ship. The ship itself, and Hunt, get caught in the time dilation effect of the black hole. 300 years pass and a salvage vessel fishes the Andromeda Ascendant out again. The Commonwealth has fallen in that time (although it was pushed).
Hunt objects to the attempts to salvage his ship, and plans to see if he can restore the Systems Commonwealth. What you’d call a stretch goal in current terms I think.
At one point, a character describes Hunt as a Greek god. Kevin Sorbo, who plays Hunt, was previously known for playing the Greek demigod Hercules, in the (highly fictionalised) Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, so that’s probably not a coincidence.
