“The Boogieman – October 31, 1964” is episode five of season three of Quantum Leap.
At the end of the previous episode, “One Strobe Over the Line – June 15, 1965”, Sam leaped into a spooky-looking place. He heads up some stairs and hears a groan from behind a door. H opens it, someone yells surprise and he falls down the stairs. A woman checks on Sam – Josh is his host’s name – and the man apologises for scaring him. It sounds like they’re preparing a haunted house. The woman, Mary, is his fiancée. The man as he leaves says he hopes to write the scariest book in the world one day. Mary assumes that Josh is worried how to kill someone. In his novel. And there’s sounds from Tully working on the windows.
In Josh’s office, Sam sees Josh’s novels. Sam is reading Josh’s work when he thinks the cat is speaking for one minute, but it’s Tully working on the windows. Tully is talking about the devil when a goat on the ground pulls a rag underneath the ladder. It, and Tully, fall. Tully is dead.
The sheriff is being told what happened. Though Josh doesn’t have a goat. Al shows up and suggests it was someone else’s goat. Sam says he didn’t push anyone.
Al says that they don’t know why Sam is there. Joshua Ray is a second-rate HP Lovecraft. And tonight, at midnight, Mary is found strangled in the church spookhouse. Joshue was the logical suspect but there was never enough evidence to arrest him. The phone rings and Mary heads to answer it, pausing as she passes Al.
Sam takes Al to Josh’s office. The story on the typewriter now has Tully’s death written in it. They start wondering about Mary.
The phone call was from a woman called Dorothy, who turns up. They chat, Dorothy heads to the kitchen and Sam is talking to Mary when there’s a scream rom, the kitchen and a crash. Dorothy is dead. And there’s a black mamba loose in the kitchen.
Al is convinced that Mary is a witch and is responsible for all the deaths. The goat appears but no-one other than Sam sees it. There definitely seems to be something creepy going on.
