“My Struggle” is episode one of season ten of The X-Files.
Fourteen years after the series was last made and almost eight after the second film, The X-Files are back.
This episode opens with Mulder briefly narrating some information to probably give a heads-up to those who haven’t seen the series before, before going to New Mexico in 1947 where a UFO has just crashed. Various clips from this are shown throughout the programme.
In the present day, Mulder and Scully are no longer together. Scully is working in a hospital in Washington, D.C., when she gets a call from A.D. Skinner, who is still at the Bureau. He wants Mulder to meet a man called Tad O’Malley, a right wing conspiracy theorist who presents a web programme and who has made a fair bit of money from his theories.
O’Malley has evidence of abductions and human-made alien tech, and a theory about a vast conspiracy that differs with most of what Mulder had previously believed. He is going to reveal this live on air.
As well as Mulder, Scully and Skinner, the Smoking Man returns too (suffering some of the side effects from his habit).
