Doctor Who – The Girl Who Died

“The Girl Who Died” is episode five of season nine of the new Doctor Who.

The TARDIS winds up somewhere on Earth and the Doctor and Clara are captured by Vikings. The Doctor pretends to be Odin, but this doesn’t work when an enormous face appears in the sky also claiming to be Odin – a rather more impressive impersonation of a god than that of the Doctor.

Beings in some sort of armour are transported down to the village and Odin says that the best warriors in the village are going to be taken to serve him in Valhalla. It’s a lie, of course.

Clara tries to talk things to a sensible conclusion, but unfortunately the girl she is with – Maisie Williams, probably most famous for playing Arya Stark in Game of Thrones – goes all Viking, and challenges some very powerful aliens to a fight (‘Come and have a go if you think you’re hard enough’?).

There’s another reference to hybrids, which was first mentioned by Davros in “The Witch’s Familiar”. The Doctor is also fretting again about making changes in the timeline.

The Doctor also says ‘Reverse the polarity of the neutron flow’ at one point; a nonsense techno babble phrase strongly associated with the Third Doctor, although he only used it in its entirety twice on screen.

This is another two-parter; it continues in the next episode, “The Woman Who Lived”.
